Widex_Dex Series

A Family of remote hi-tech devices to help with impaired hearing

We helped Widex both define and and design their recent family of hi technology remote accessories to be used with their range of digital hearing aids to help improve impaired hearing.
Three devices were developed – RC-Dex: A simple small 3 button pocket remote control device to adust program and volume on the digital hearing aid. TV-Dex: A remote device that has a base connected to the TV and streams its sound though the hearing aid, controlled by a handheld remote device. M-Dex: Offering wireless connectivity between hearing aid and a mobile phone, practically turning the hearing aid into a wireless headset. It also has a function called FreeFocus. This lets the user focus their hearing in selected directions.

A process of workshops and iterations

The project was initiated with a series of workshops with the R&D team at Widex where together we defined the basis for the devices and their functionality. The industrial design on the devices was worked on in parallel with hardware internals with a focus on creating a design language across the devices to help communicate a strong brand presence. Many iterations were made across all devices as the project matured with regards to economy, components and features. The challenge through this journey was to preserve the original design intent for the design language through multiple product changes with spec and functions.

Hi-tech yet simple and friendly

Technophobia in older users is common and we focused in on creating a simple and friendly form with intuitive interfaces while at the same time acknowledging that the store dispensers buying into the product are more often than not technology driven and looking for a wide offering.
